There is no single correct way to collect. Start with a character, athlete, set, artist, team, or design that means something to you. Decide whether your goal is enjoyment, set completion, display, play, or long-term preservation before spending heavily.

Understanding Grading

Professional grading evaluates authenticity and condition, then seals the collectible in a labeled holder. A grade does not guarantee future value, and grading costs should be weighed against the item’s condition, importance, and expected resale demand.

  • Choose a grading company based on your collecting goal.

Card Care & Storage

Protection should fit the item. Avoid forcing cards into holders, touching surfaces unnecessarily, or storing collectibles in direct sunlight, heat, or high humidity.

  • Use clean hands and handle cards by the edges.
  • Use sleeves before rigid holders when appropriate.
  • Store upright in a cool, dry, stable environment.

Buying Raw or Graded

Raw collectibles may cost less and can be easier to enjoy in binders or displays. Graded collectibles offer third-party authentication and a protected holder, but the premium can vary widely.

  • Buy raw when condition and personal enjoyment matter most.
  • Consider graded copies for authentication or display.
  • Review actual photos rather than relying only on titles.

Shipping & Protection

Packaging should reflect the product. Individual cards, slabs, sealed products, figures, and blind boxes require different protection. Tokiya inspects and packs each order according to the item being shipped.

  • Cards are protected against movement and bending.
  • Slabs and boxed items receive cushioning where appropriate.
  • Tracking is provided when included with the selected service.

Common questions.

Should every valuable card be graded?

No. Consider the card’s condition, grading cost, personal importance, and realistic market demand. Some cards are better enjoyed raw.

What is the difference between a sleeve and a top loader?

A soft sleeve protects the surface. A rigid holder adds structure against bending. Many collectors use both together when the card and holder sizes are compatible.

How should sealed products be stored?

Keep them dry, out of direct sunlight, and away from heat or heavy pressure. Avoid stacking weight on products with delicate packaging.

Can Tokiya guarantee an ungraded item will receive a certain grade?

No. Grading is performed by independent companies and results can vary. Product photos and stated condition should be reviewed before purchase.
